Scribbler Factfile: Mary Moore

Mary spent a very happy childhood during the great depression of the 1930s despite the fact that there was great poverty throughout the land. She was lucky that her father was never unemployed. Entertainments were usually ‘home made’ and generally very creative. Books were the breath of life to the whole family who were all avid readers. Classical music including Opera was provided by her eldest brother who spent all his pocket money on classical 12 inch records.

She left school with good reports but went on to take the Northern Counties certificates in English and commercial arithmetic and obtained a book keeping qualification. Her first job was as a cashier. In l942 she was conscripted into the A.T.S. and ended her war service as a Company Sgt. Clerk.

She married twice and was widowed twice. Her daughter was born in l947.She entered Local Government service in l959 and continued for 23 years until l982.

Mary’s interest in writing stems from when she was growing up in a family who all dabbled in writing. Mary’s special interest is reading social history and researching odd subjects that crop up from there. She is particularly interested in the English Civil War and Cromwell’s rising against King Charles 1st.

Mary‘s favourite words are Why? How?: and there must be a reason! Mary‘s other hobbies are painting , drawing, craft work.
