
In November 2009, the Woodham Scribblers were set a challenge by former member Matt Bowen. Their task was to complete the following story:
Joe poured his cereal into the breakfast bowel and stared at it, emptily. Lethargy prevented him from summoning up the energy to pour the milk and somehow he had to make it through this day. He leaned back against the sink and slowly sank to the stone floor trying to fight back the tears in his eyes.
Meanwhile, 20 odd miles away a phone was ringing. Susie glanced at the name on the display and instantly pressed ignore. Her mind wandered briefly wondering what would happen when she eventually did answer the call.
"Focus," shemuttered to herself so none of the colleagues around her could hear, "There's nothing you can do about it now."
On the other side of the world Kyle sat on the beach watching the sunset and allowed himself a wry smile
'Things are beginning to come together quite nicely,' he thought, 'now the hard work begins
From there, the scribblers had to use their scribbling power to complete the story, and were reminded that attention to detail would be a key measure in the judging. There was also a requirement for a festive edge in the story. All of the entries were returned before Christmas and judged.
